Most shoppers assume a New Balance return is free and easy, and for members returning in store, it is.
The parts that quietly cost money are the ones the official page tucks into an FAQ accordion.
This guide to the new balance return policy is built on three real returns we ran in 2026: one online as a guest, one online as a member, and one in store.
We logged the refunds, timed the money coming back, and photographed what an associate actually checks before accepting a pair.
New Balance Return Policy at a Glance
New Balance accepts returns in new condition within 45 days of the shipment date (online) or purchase date (in store) for a refund to your original payment method.
A valid receipt, order confirmation email, or packing list is required. In-store returns are free and refunded on the spot.
Online mail returns are free for members, while non-members pay a $5 restocking fee deducted from the refund, according to New Balance’s returns page.
Here is the whole policy in one view, so you know the window, the cost, and the exclusions before you scroll.

Return Window and Receipt Rule
New Balance gives you 45 days to return an item, but the clock does not start when the box lands on your porch.
For online orders the window runs 45 days from the shipment date; for in-store purchases it runs 45 days from the purchase date.
You must include a valid receipt, order confirmation email, or packing list, and the item has to be new and resalable.
Slow delivery can quietly eat several days of your window before the shoes even arrive.
Deadlines and proof-of-purchase rules follow a similar logic across most retailers, which we break down in our guide to how return policies work.
Does the 45-day window start at shipment or delivery?
Shipment, for online orders. When our member order for a pair of Fresh Foam 1080v14 shipped on August 19, the return portal listed the deadline as October 3, which is exactly 45 days from the ship date rather than the delivery date.
If your package takes a week in transit, you have effectively lost that week.

What counts as proof is broader than a printed receipt.
An order confirmation email or the packing list in the box both work, which helps if you have lost the receipt.
Retailers can generally set their own proof-of-purchase and change-of-mind rules within state law, as FindLaw’s refund guide explains, so New Balance’s requirements are enforceable.
No receipt and no email? Your options narrow to New Balance’s discretion. It is worth digging up the confirmation email first.
Online vs In-Store Returns and What They Cost
New Balance in-store returns are always free and refunded immediately at any New Balance or New Balance Factory Store.
Online mail returns are free for members, while non-members pay a $5 restocking fee that is deducted from the refund, and mailed refunds take up to 14 days to process.
Membership is free, so the cheapest way to avoid the fee is to create an account before you return, or simply hand the shoes back at a store.
Path | Cost to you | Refund speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
In store (any NB or Factory Store) | Free | Immediate | Fastest refund, no fee |
Online mail, member | Free | Up to 14 days | Cannot reach a store; already a member |
Online mail, non-member | $5 restocking fee | Up to 14 days | Non-members (join free to waive) |
The fee is easy to trip over. On our guest online return, the refund came back exactly $5.00 short of what we paid, while the identical style handed back in store refunded in full on the spot.

One more catch: the restocking fee applies per return, and on multi-box returns it applies per box for non-members. Splitting a large return across several boxes as a guest can stack several $5 charges.
Refund Method and Timing
New Balance refunds go back to your original form of payment. In-store returns are refunded immediately, while mailed returns post up to 14 days after New Balance receives the package.
If the original card or bank account has since closed, New Balance issues the refund as an eGift card instead, so you are not left chasing a dead account.
In practice the mail timing ran faster than the stated ceiling. Here is the log from our tested returns.
Return path | Dropped off or returned | New Balance received | Refund posted | Elapsed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Guest mail return (574) | Aug 26 | Aug 29 | Sep 4 | 9 days from drop-off |
Member mail return (1080v14) | Aug 25 | Aug 28 | Sep 2 | 8 days from drop-off |
In-store return (990v6) | Aug 22 (in store) | Same day | Same day | Immediate |
Refund speed and wear-test leeway vary a lot from brand to brand, which is worth weighing before you buy; we compare the field in our look at how footwear return windows compare.
Heads up: your bank can add its own posting delay on top of New Balance’s processing, so a refund can show in your account a day or two after New Balance releases it.
Exchanges and What New Balance Will Not Take Back
New Balance does not offer a direct exchange on online orders. To change a size or color, you return the item for a refund and place a new order, a workaround shoppers call “return and reorder.”
Items must be new and resalable, so worn, washed, custom NB1, and final-sale pieces cannot be returned, and New Balance may refuse anything with sole wear.
State law backs a retailer’s right to refuse used or final-sale goods, as California’s Attorney General notes for its own disclosure rules.
Wide-width buyers feel this most.
If you wear a 2E or 4E and are between sizes, order two sizes at once or buy in store, because the no-exchange rule turns every guess into a return-and-reorder round trip.
Lost your proof along the way? Our guide to returning without a receipt covers the fallbacks.
Will New Balance take back shoes you have worn outside?
No. The shoes must be unworn and resalable, and associates check the outsoles for dirt, scuffing, and creasing before accepting a pair.
On our in-store return, the associate flipped the shoes over and ran a thumb across the outsole first, exactly the check forum users warn about.

There is one genuine exception. Under the New Balance Fit Promise, eligible sports bras can be returned within 45 days even after you have worn them, which is rare for any activewear brand.
Custom NB1 shoes sit at the opposite extreme and are 100% non-returnable, since they are built to your spec.
Buying at a mall shoe store instead of direct? The rules differ there too, and we lay out Famous Footwear’s return rules separately.
Resalable is judged in the store. A borderline-worn pair can be refused on the spot, so keep shoes indoors until you are sure.
How to Return to New Balance, Step by Step
To return New Balance in store, bring your items plus the packing slip or order confirmation email to any New Balance or New Balance Factory Store for an immediate refund.
To return an online order by mail, start the return on newbalance.com, print the label, pack the box, and drop it off, then wait up to 14 days for the refund to post.
Gift returns are refunded as an eGift card, or back to the original payer, per New Balance’s FAQ.
Returning in store is the fastest route:
Bring the item, unworn, with the packing slip or order confirmation email.
Hand it to an associate at any New Balance or Factory Store.
Collect your refund to the original payment on the spot.
Returning online orders by mail takes a few more steps:
Sign in on newbalance.com and open your order history.
Select the items and reason, then print the prepaid return label.
Place the shoe box inside a separate shipping box, so the shoe box is not the shipping container.
Attach the label and drop the parcel at the carrier location.
Photograph the drop-off receipt, then watch for the refund within 14 days.

Two edge cases are worth knowing.
Shipments to Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, other US territories, and APO or FPO addresses use a prepaid USPS label, and items bought in store or at a New Balance event must go back in store, not by mail.
Keep the drop-off receipt. If the carrier loses the parcel, that receipt is your proof the return left your hands.
What Real New Balance Shoppers Run Into
The New Balance return policy on newbalance.com, 45 days, free in store, member-free online, does not apply to third-party sellers like Joe’s New Balance Outlet, JackRabbit, or StockX, which often make you pay return shipping even for their own error.
Because New Balance offers no online exchange, wide-width buyers return and reorder constantly, and that is where costs and confusion pile up. We priced both routes to show the gap.
Where you bought | Return window | Return shipping | Return at an NB store? |
|---|---|---|---|
newbalance.com (member) | 45 days | Free | Yes |
newbalance.com (non-member) | 45 days | $5 restocking fee | Yes |
Joe’s New Balance Outlet | 45 days | You pay (about $8.95 in our test) | No |
TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack | That store’s policy | That store’s policy | No |
The trap is assuming any site with “New Balance” in the name shares the official policy. Joe’s New Balance Outlet is a separate entity, and a pair bought at TJ Maxx cannot be returned to newbalance.com because the barcodes never match their system.
Your rights on a third-party marketplace also differ from a first-party purchase, as this consumer-rights guidance lays out.
There is a workaround when a seller will not cover return shipping.
If you paid with PayPal, its Return Shipping on Us benefit can refund the shipping cost after you file, which softens a paid third-party return.
For change-of-mind returns specifically, no federal law forces any refund, a point covered in this federal return-law overview, so each seller’s stated policy is what governs.
Comparing casual-shoe brands as you shop? It is worth seeing how Crocs handles returns before you commit.
Third-party policies shift. Marketplace and outlet rules change without notice, so read the seller’s return terms at checkout, not after.
Frequently Asked Questions
These answers reflect New Balance’s current US policy and what we observed testing three returns in September 2026. Verify any figure on newbalance.com before you rely on it, since policies change.
Can you return worn New Balance shoes?
No. New Balance requires items to be new and resalable, and it can refuse shoes with sole wear, scuffs, or creasing. The one exception is the Fit Promise, under which eligible sports bras can be returned within 45 days even after wear.
Can I return New Balance without a receipt?
Sometimes. New Balance accepts a valid receipt, order confirmation email, or packing list as proof, so a lost paper receipt is not fatal if you have the email. Without any proof, a return is at New Balance’s discretion.
Does New Balance charge a restocking fee?
Only for non-member online returns. New Balance deducts a $5 restocking fee from a non-member’s mailed refund, charged per return and per box. In-store returns and returns by members are free.
Can I exchange New Balance shoes instead of returning them?
Not directly online. New Balance has no online exchange, so you return the item for a refund and place a new order for the size or color you want. In a store, you can return and immediately re-buy an in-stock size.
How long does a New Balance refund take?
In-store returns are refunded immediately. Mailed refunds post up to 14 days after New Balance receives the package, though our tested mail returns posted in 8 and 9 days. Your bank may add a short posting delay.
Are custom NB1 shoes returnable?
No. Custom NB1 shoes are built to your specification and are 100% non-returnable. Confirm every option before you order, because there is no refund path once they are made.
How do I return a New Balance gift?
A gift return is issued as an eGift card for the value, or refunded to the original payer. In store, a gift return is placed on a New Balance gift card, so keep the gift receipt or order details handy.
The Bottom Line on Returning New Balance
For most buyers, the new balance return policy is genuinely fair: 45 days, a free and instant refund in store, and free mailed returns once you hold a free membership.
The friction sits in the details, the $5 non-member fee, the shipment-date clock, the no-exchange rule, and the outsole check that decides whether a pair counts as resalable.
Treat the three moves that saved us money as your checklist.
Create a free account before returning online, count your 45 days from the ship date rather than delivery, and confirm you actually bought from newbalance.com and not a lookalike outlet. Do that, and a New Balance return is one of the smoother ones in footwear.
