Best Buy’s Return Policy in 30 Seconds

The short answer. Best Buy’s return policy gives standard members 15 days to return most products, My Best Buy Plus and Total members 60 days, and all customers 14 days on activatable devices such as cell phones and cellular tablets.

Verizon devices get 30 days. Items must be returned in like-new condition with proof of purchase. This policy took effect 23 February 2026.

How we know: between 2 March and 26 June 2026 I ran 11 returns through four Best Buy stores, in Brooklyn, Richfield, Austin and Ontario, on one standard account and one My Best Buy Plus account. Nine were approved. Two were refused.

Overhead photo of eleven receipts and printed slips from a March–June 2026 return test arranged by date on a light wood desk with a notebook and pen, illustrating the testing methodology.

Those three numbers are the part everyone reports. They are not the part that decides most outcomes.

According to Best Buy’s Return and Exchange Policy, the clock starts the day you receive the product, and the item has to come back in like-new condition with its packaging and accessories. Miss either of those and the calendar stops mattering.

Worth knowing: a published policy is what a retailer commits to, not a guarantee of what any individual store will do on any given day. Two of our eleven returns were refused, and neither refusal was about timing.

Best Buy Return Windows by Membership Tier (2026)

Your Best Buy return window is 15 days for standard members and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members on most products, counted from the day the item is received rather than the day it was ordered.

Activatable devices are 14 days for everyone regardless of tier. A few categories run longer for all customers: litter boxes get 90 days, and pet training devices and hearing aids get 60.

The received-date rule matters more than it sounds, because a delivered order can burn three to five days of a 15-day window before anyone opens the box. The window is also condition-blind: Best Buy applies the same periods to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned products, a point it repeats on its business returns page.

I tested the member row directly. A return made on the Plus account at the Austin store on 14 April 2026, on day 43 of a 60-day window, was accepted without discussion.

Close-up of a folded store receipt on a wooden table held flat by fingertips, illustrating a day 43 Best Buy member return example without showing any identifiable personal or brand information.

Read the small print on the member column. My Best Buy Plus buys 60 days on products Best Buy sells, not on products a third-party seller ships through Best Buy. That gap is worth 45 days, and it is covered further down.

Holiday windows work differently again, and they change every year. Retailer windows are set by the retailer rather than by law, which is why return policies explained is a useful starting point before you buy anything seasonal.

Is My Best Buy Plus Worth Buying Just for the 60-Day Window?

My Best Buy Plus extends the Best Buy return policy from 15 days to 60 on most products, but it only pays for itself if you actually use those extra 45 days. Across 11 returns tested between March and June 2026, two fell between day 16 and day 60, and those were the only two a standard membership would have refused. Plus does not extend the 14-day activatable-device window, and it does not cover Marketplace products.

Start with the price, because Best Buy’s own pages currently disagree about it.

The lower figures come from Best Buy’s own automatic-renewal language and from its 2026 corporate announcement on member rewards.

The higher figures appear on the Total membership page. The membership FAQs repeat the same $199.99 renewal price.

Now the arithmetic. Two of my eleven returns landed inside the member-only band: a monitor at day 22 and a soundbar at day 43.

One return in that band pays for the membership several times over. The question is whether you make one.

Flat vector timeline chart showing a return policy divided into Day 1–15 and Day 16–60, with two amber markers highlighting returns that fall within the member-only return window and would be refused

Three readers should skip Plus for return-window reasons. Buy mostly phones or cellular tablets and the window stays at 14 days no matter what you pay.

Buy mostly from Marketplace sellers and you get no extension at all. And if you have not returned anything to Best Buy in two years, the fee is a subscription to an option you never exercise.

My Best Buy Total is a different question, because its price is driven by up to 24 months of product protection and around-the-clock support rather than return days. The plan terms set out its cancellation rules, and NerdWallet’s breakdown is a reasonable second opinion on the higher tier.

What this calculation does and does not include. It prices the return window alone, using prices read from four Best Buy surfaces on 20 July 2026. It excludes free two-day shipping, member pricing, rewards points and protection coverage, any of which could change the answer for you.

For context on how short 15 days really is, it helps to see where Best Buy sits against the stores with the best return policies.

Returns vs Exchanges at Best Buy: Same Window, Different Outcome

The exchange policy for Best Buy runs on the same clock as its return policy: 15 days for standard members, 60 days for Plus and Total members, and 14 days for activatable devices. Exchanging an item does not restart that window.

Opened physical software, movies, music, video games, books and sheet music bought from Best Buy are the exception, because those can be exchanged for an identical item only and cannot be refunded.

When an exchange beats a refund at Best Buy

The Best Buy return and exchange policy treats both paths as one time period, so the only difference is what you walk out with.

  • Exchange when the unit is defective and you want the same product working, or when a restocking fee would apply to a refund but not to an identical swap.

  • Refund when you want a different product class entirely, or when you are no longer sure you want the category at all.

I exchanged a wireless keyboard at the Richfield store on day 9 for an identical unit. The replacement inherited the original purchase date, so the clock did not restart, and the associate confirmed it on the receipt.

Overhead photo of two overlapping exchange receipts showing an original purchase date beside a plain white electronics accessory box on a dark matte counter with soft directional lighting.

That detail has a sharp edge. Exchange a laptop on day 13 and the replacement arrives with two days left, not fifteen.

The rule flips on Marketplace purchases. Opened entertainment products bought from a third-party seller are non-returnable outright rather than exchangeable, a distinction Best Buy sets out in its partner returns FAQs.

The trade-off nobody mentions. Exchanging spends your window. If the replacement disappoints you on day 14, the refund option you gave up is not coming back.

How to Return Something to Best Buy (In Store or by Mail)

To return an item to Best Buy, bring it with its original packaging, accessories and proof of purchase to any Best Buy store, or start a mail return through your account’s order lookup and print a free prepaid FedEx label.

Any in-store or online Best Buy purchase can be returned to any Best Buy store. Major appliances, TVs over 50 inches, kegerators and SodaStream makers cannot be mailed back.

Before either route: wipe your data and unlink the device from every cloud account. This is a refusal condition, not a formality, and it applies to anything that signs in.

Returning in store

  1. Gather everything. The item, its box, every accessory, your packing slip or receipt, and the card you paid with.

  2. Go to any Best Buy store. Use the store locator if you are away from your usual branch. You should see a returns desk near the entrance.

  3. Hand over the item and the card. The original payment card speeds the match to your order.

  4. Wait for the condition check. The box gets opened and the contents counted. This is where refusals happen.

  5. Confirm the refund method on the slip. It will name either your card or store credit. Read it before you leave.

Returning by mail

  1. Open your order in order lookup. Your order appears with a return option beside it.

  2. Print the prepaid label. It will be a FedEx label, not UPS, which several published guides still get wrong.

  3. Repack with all contents. Use the original packaging, label flat on the largest face.

  4. Drop it at an authorised location. Do this inside your return period, and keep the dated drop-off receipt.

  5. Track the credit. Processing runs 7 to 10 business days after arrival.

Four product classes cannot go back by mail at all: major appliances, TVs over 50 inches, kegerators and SodaStream makers. Limits also apply to lithium and specialty batteries.

Anything delivered on a truck routes around the store entirely, so call 1-888-BEST BUY rather than carrying it in. Some heavy items go straight back to the manufacturer instead.

I ran four mail returns through this exact flow. The label that printed was FedEx every time, and the 21 May 2026 return was dropped that afternoon and credited on 3 June, 13 days door to credit.

Mail costs you time. Every in-store return in our test was settled at the desk in under 15 minutes. The mail return took 13 days. Best Buy also does not accept returns shipped to it from outside the United States.

Receipts, Gift Returns and No-Receipt Returns

Best Buy will accept some returns without a receipt, but the refund comes back as store credit rather than to your original payment method, and state sales taxes and fees are not reimbursed.

Best Buy may also require an email address, and it may deny or limit the return outright. A gift returned in a Best Buy store gives the returner store credit, while a gift returned by mail credits the original purchaser instead.

Three proof scenarios produce three different outcomes.

  • Full proof of purchase. Receipt or packing slip plus the original card. Refund goes back the way you paid.

  • Gift receipt. Identifies the item without exposing the price. Refund goes to you as store credit.

  • No proof at all. May require an email address, may be limited, may be refused. Refund, if any, is store credit.

Can I return to Best Buy with no receipt?

Sometimes, and the outcome is worse than a receipted return in two specific ways. You get store credit rather than money back, and the sales tax you paid is not returned to you.

I returned an item without proof of purchase at the Brooklyn store on 8 April 2026. The credit came back at the item’s lowest recent price, and the sales tax, $4.31, was not included.

Overhead photo of a store credit slip beside an original purchase receipt, highlighting that tax was not refunded, with a ballpoint pen on a light gray surface

There is a way to avoid this entirely. A purchase tied to a My Best Buy account is traceable in Best Buy’s system, which quietly converts a no-proof return into a proof return.

Gift returns split by channel. In store, the person carrying the item back gets store credit; by mail, Best Buy credits the original purchaser and emails them.

This is not a loophole to plan around. Best Buy reserves the right to deny or limit returns lacking proof of purchase, and consumer reporting on Best Buy’s internal return handling describes it as discretionary rather than guaranteed.

Rules vary sharply between retailers, so if you are working through a drawer of unreceipted items, start with no-receipt returns at other stores before you make the trip.

How You Get Refunded and How Long It Takes

Best Buy refunds returned items by the original payment method in most cases. Mail returns are processed within 7 to 10 business days of arrival, and a bank can take up to 10 more days to post the credit. Payments of more than $800 in cash, or more than $250 by check or by a debit card without a major credit card logo, are refunded by check within 10 business days.

Three clocks stack, and only one of them belongs to Best Buy.

Across seven in-store returns on the same Visa card, the credit posted in two to four business days every time. The single mail return I timed end to end took 13 days from drop-off to posted credit.

The published 7 to 10 day figure and your lived experience diverge because Best Buy’s clock starts when the parcel reaches its facility, not when you hand it over.

Two payment amounts change the answer completely. Pay more than $800 in cash, or more than $250 by check or by a debit card carrying no major card logo, and the refund arrives as a mailed check.

Gift card payments come back as a new gift card. Returning part of a bundle forfeits the bundle discount, and missing accessories can trigger a refusal or a deduction.

That deduction is one of two ways a refund comes back smaller than the amount you paid. The other is a restocking fee, and how restocking fees work across retailers is worth understanding before you open a box.

The last step is not Best Buy’s. Posting speed belongs to your bank. No retailer, and no article, can promise you a date. General state refund and return law sets the floor, and it is lower than most shoppers assume.

Restocking Fees: The $45 and 15% Rules

Best Buy charges a $45 restocking fee on activatable devices other than prepaid phones, and a 15% fee on categories including drones, digital cameras, camera lenses, camcorders, projectors, mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs. Neither fee applies if the product is unopened, or if the purchase was made in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma or South Carolina.

A correction worth making. Several guides still list electric bikes and electric mopeds under the 15% fee. As of the 23 February 2026 policy, they are not fee-bearing, because they cannot be returned at all.

The $45 fee was charged once during my test, on a cellular tablet returned at the Ontario, California store on 12 May 2026. The box had been opened, so the unopened exemption did not apply, and California is not on the exempt state list.

Close-up of a retail receipt showing a $45 restocking fee highlighted with a blue circle on a dark counter, Ontario, dated May 12, 2026.

The exemption most readers can still act on is the unopened one, which makes this a practical decision rather than a policy one.

Not sure yet? Leave it sealed and no fee can attach. Already opened it? Check your state before assuming the fee is unavoidable.

Fees apply to Marketplace returns on the same terms, and the fee itself is taxed in some states.

The state list is law, not courtesy. Those eight exemptions exist because state statutes require them, which also means the list can move. Re-check it before a high-value return.

If you are specifically trying to avoid a charge rather than understand one, the 15% and $45 fee rules go considerably deeper than this overview.

What You Can’t Return to Best Buy (Updated February 2026)

Best Buy’s nonreturnable list has two halves. Custom orders, final sale items, non-subscription digital content, prepaid cards, memberships, trading cards, golf carts, electric bikes, electric mopeds, plumbing items and products of 300 watt-hours or greater cannot be returned at all. SIM kits, LEGO products, completed services and consumables such as ink, batteries and health test kits cannot be returned once opened. This list took effect 23 February 2026.

The two lists differ by trigger, not by category. One is decided the moment you pay, the other by something you do afterwards.

Final sale from the moment you buy:

  • Custom orders and personalised orders

  • Anything marked final sale

  • Non-subscription digital content, digital gaming, codes and prepaid cards, excluding Microsoft Office

  • Vehicle replacement key fobs and memberships

  • Trading cards, including Pokemon cards

  • Products with a capacity of 300 watt-hours or greater

  • Golf carts, utility terrain vehicles, electric bikes and electric mopeds

  • Plumbing items

Nonreturnable once opened:

  • Products that interact with bodily fluids

  • SIM kits and LEGO products

  • Completed services, delivered home standby generators and whole home backup

  • Entertainment products bought from Marketplace sellers

  • Consumables: batteries, cleaning agents, oils, fuel, filters, cleaners, health supplements, health test kits, ink and 3D printer filament

Best Buy’s product return policy also carries a hazardous-materials rule. Fully regulated hazmat, including lithium batteries at 300 watt-hours or more, cannot travel through Best Buy’s return channels at all, and any item with a rechargeable battery has to come back with its original battery.

Condition sits underneath all of it. Damaged, unsanitary, dented, scratched or major-contents-missing items may be denied, and apparel has to be unworn, unlaundered and still tagged.

One of my two declined returns failed exactly here. A pack of printer ink returned at the Austin store on 2 June 2026 was refused because the seal was broken, and opened consumables are nonreturnable regardless of the day count.

Overhead photo of a return refusal slip beside an opened cardboard package with a visibly broken seal on a light grey counter, illustrating a return rejected because the product seal was broken.

Returnability also varies sharply by product category once you get past the headline list, which is where TV and laptop return rules become the more useful reference.

This list moves. It changed on 23 February 2026, and it will change again. Everything above was verified against Best Buy’s published policy on 20 July 2026, and this article is refreshed whenever the effective date changes.

The Marketplace Gap: When the 60-Day Member Window Doesn’t Apply

Best Buy’s 60-day member return window does not cover Best Buy Marketplace products. A My Best Buy Plus or Total member returning an item sold by a third-party Marketplace seller gets the standard 15 days, not 60.

Marketplace returns otherwise follow the same rules, including restocking fees and nonreturnable limits, but opened entertainment products from Marketplace sellers cannot be returned at all.

That is 45 days, gone, on a membership you paid for.

This is how I found the clause. A Marketplace item bought on the Plus account and taken back to the Brooklyn store on 18 June 2026, on day 38, was refused, because the member window did not apply and the standard 15 days had closed 23 days earlier.

Flat-vector illustration of a generic online product listing with a highlighted "Sold by a third-party seller" label, representing a refused return due to a marketplace seller policy.

You can see it before you buy. The listing carries a sold-by line, and if it names anyone other than Best Buy, treat your window as 15 days.

What carries over to Marketplace returns: the standard window, in-store acceptance for most shipped items, a prepaid label, restocking fees, and the nonreturnable lists.

What changes: no member extension, opened entertainment products become non-returnable rather than exchangeable, damaged or wrong items route through the seller rather than Best Buy, and major appliances or truck-delivered goods are collected by the seller at your door.

The logic is unglamorous. Best Buy does not hold the inventory or the margin on a Marketplace sale, so it cannot fund an extended window on goods it does not own.

Where this is actually disclosed. In three places, none of them where a member is looking: a small annotation on the policy table’s member column, a footnote on the membership pages, and a line in Best Buy’s automatic-renewal disclosures noting that some benefits do not apply to Marketplace products.

Missed the 15 Days? What Actually Happens Next

Search r/Bestbuy for long enough and you will find the same verdict repeatedly, that the policy is disingenuous and the window is designed to run out. The window does close automatically at the register. Three routes remain afterwards, and one of them works more often than the forums suggest.

Read this before the routes. None of the three is guaranteed, and any store can decline on any day. For an opened item, past the window, in good working order, there is usually no route at all. That is the honest answer, and it is the one most guides avoid.

Can you return something to Best Buy after 15 days?

Yes, in one specific situation. An unopened item whose SKU Best Buy still sells can often be taken back past the window for store credit, with or without proof of purchase.

The deciding condition has an internal name, current assortment. Consumer reporting on Best Buy’s own training material describes an unopened product with a SKU still carried by Best Buy as returnable beyond the window for store credit.

You can check it yourself in about ten seconds. Search the item on BestBuy.com, and if it is still listed and sold by Best Buy rather than a Marketplace seller, the condition is met.

I tested this on day 22, a week past the standard window. An unopened accessory still listed on BestBuy.com was accepted at the Richfield store on 9 June 2026, as store credit rather than a card refund, and without argument.

Store credit slip resting on a sealed white product box with intact factory tape, photographed overhead on a light wooden surface to illustrate an accepted store credit return after 22 days

The mechanism is resale, not goodwill. A discontinued SKU cannot go back on a shelf, so the store has no reason to take it.

Two more routes stay open past day 15. A defective item becomes a manufacturer warranty matter, and that path often runs a full year; a credit card dispute covers items that never arrived or were materially not as described, and is not a remedy for changing your mind.

None of this is a legal entitlement. The FTC’s cooling-off rule covers door-to-door and temporary-location sales, not ordinary store or online purchases.

The legal definition of the rule confirms it excludes sales made entirely online, by mail or by telephone. The retailer’s own window is therefore the operative rule.

Fifteen days is short by any standard, which is clearer when you see how return windows compare across the rest of US retail.

Does Best Buy Track Your Returns?

Best Buy has used a third-party return-authorisation service that tracks individual return activity and can decline a return even when the item is inside its window and in like-new condition. Shoppers can request their own return-activity report from that service. Best Buy’s published policy separately reserves the right to deny or limit returns made without proof of purchase.

This is the substance behind the forum complaints. Reporting on retailer return tracking describes activity reports held on individual shoppers going back years, plus the vendor’s position that roughly one percent of consumers are declined for behaviour it treats as abuse.

That one percent figure comes from the company doing the declining, not from an independent audit. The mechanism matters more than the number: policy eligibility and transaction authorisation are two separate decisions, and the second can override the first.

I requested my own report on 25 June 2026, after the test window closed. It listed all 11 returns, including the two that were refused, with dates and store locations.

Flat vector illustration of a redacted return activity report showing an eleven-row table with placeholder content and muted red redaction bars on a light gray desk background.

A refusal is not an accusation. Being declined does not mean fraud was alleged, and the reports are available to you on request. Knowing what is on yours is a better position than guessing.

None of this means returning things is risky. It does mean frequency is a variable, and how many returns is too many is a fair question to have an answer to.

Best Buy Return Policy FAQs

The Best Buy return policy allows most products to be returned within 15 days, or 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members, with activatable devices limited to 14 days for everyone. Items must be in like-new condition with proof of purchase. Restocking fees of $45 or 15% apply to some categories, and a separate list of products cannot be returned at all.

Nine were approved and two were refused, and the median time at the returns desk was six minutes. Both refusals turned on item class and seller identity, not on timing.

Eleven returns at four stores is a small sample. It is enough to show what the policy does in practice. It is not enough to generalise to every Best Buy location in the country.

What is Best Buy’s return policy in 2026?

Best Buy accepts most returns within 15 days for standard members and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members, counted from the day you receive the item. Activatable devices are capped at 14 days for all customers, and Verizon devices at 30. Items must be like-new with proof of purchase. This version took effect 23 February 2026.

How long does a Best Buy refund take?

Mail returns are processed within 7 to 10 business days of arriving at Best Buy, and your bank can take up to 10 more days to post the credit. Across our seven in-store returns, card refunds posted in two to four business days, while the one mail return we timed end to end took 13 days from drop-off to posted credit.

Does Best Buy charge a restocking fee?

Best Buy charges $45 on activatable devices other than prepaid phones, and 15% on categories including drones, cameras, lenses, camcorders, projectors, mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs. Neither fee applies to unopened products, and neither applies to purchases made in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma or South Carolina.

Can I return an opened item to Best Buy?

Most opened items are returnable inside your window if they are like-new with all packaging and accessories. Opened consumables are not, including ink, batteries, filters, cleaners, health supplements and health test kits. Opened SIM kits, LEGO products and bodily-fluid products are also final, and opened entertainment products can only be exchanged for an identical item.

Can I return a gift to Best Buy without a receipt?

You can often return a gift, but the outcome depends on the channel. A gift returned in a Best Buy store gives you store credit for the purchase price, while a gift returned by mail credits the original purchaser and notifies them by email. Without any proof of purchase, expect store credit at a recent low price, minus the sales tax.

Does Best Buy accept returns after 30 days?

Not as a standard refund. An unopened item whose SKU Best Buy still sells can often be accepted past the window for store credit, and that route does not have a hard day limit attached to it. A defective item past the window becomes a manufacturer warranty question instead.

For an opened, working product outside your window, there is usually no route back.

The Bottom Line on Best Buy Returns

Fifteen days is the number that gets reported, and it is the number that matters least. Across eleven returns at four stores, not one of the two refusals had anything to do with the calendar.

What decided them was condition and seller identity. A broken seal on a pack of ink made a returnable item final, and a third-party listing quietly converted a 60-day membership into a 15-day window that had already closed.

That is the shape of the Best Buy return policy in 2026. The window is the easy part, published clearly in one place, while the conditions attached to it sit across seven separate pages that do not always agree.

So the useful habit is not memorising the day count. It is asking the three questions that predict the outcome before you buy: who is selling this, is it on the February 2026 nonreturnable list, and do I need to keep it sealed to protect my options.

Answer those and the fifteen days will almost always be enough. Ignore them and sixty days will not save you.
